Meet the 2011 SLA President!

In all of our MLIS classes we envision the library and information profession of the future. Here at St. Kate’s we will have a special opportunity to meet and have a discussion with the 2011 SLA President Cindy Romaine. Cindy’s platform for 2011 is “Future Ready.” This year SLA members are discussing what it means to be Future Ready in the blog Future Ready 365. Every day since the beginning of the year someone has posted their idea of Future Ready. What is yours?

On the evening of April 4 Cindy Romaine will be presenting and leading a discussion here at St. Catherine’s. Before the formal presentation, Cindy would like to talk with students and faculty to hear what Future Ready means to you and how the MLIS education fits into your view. Please join us for the student discussion from 5 - 5:30 p.m. and then stay for the formal presentation and discussion beginning at 5:30 p.m.

This event is sponsored by the Minnesota Chapter of the SLA and is being hosted by the St. Kate’s SLA Student Group. It will take place in the MLIS department area in the Coeur de Catherine lower level.

Apply for the SLA Conference Scholarship

This year the student group is able to offer a $1,700 scholarship for a St. Kate's MLIS student to attend the SLA Annual Conference. The 2011 conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 12 - 15.

To apply:

Submit an essay of 1,500 words.
Be a first-time conference attendee.
Be a St. Kate's MLIS student and a SLA member (student membership fee is $40).

Application deadline is March 14, 2011

Soliciting Silent Auction Donations

On Tuesday, December 7, 2010, the St. Kate’s Special Library Association Student Group will host a Silent Auction fundraiser at the Holiday Party event sponsored by MALL and SLA at St. Kate's to raise funds for a scholarship. This scholarship will help to send a St. Kate’s MLIS student to the SLA Annual Conference being held in Philadelphia in June 2011.

We would love your help with donations!

Successful Fall 2010 Events

The student group sponsored two events in October, the Plymouth Library Tour and Speed Networking event and Salon #4 – How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All. Both events were in collaboration with the MN chapter and it was great to see so many students and MN chapter members at the events.

On October 15, the student group hosted its first Salon series event for the Marilyn Johnson lecture, How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All, held at St. Catherine University. Ms. Johnson spoke of how once she lost her research and IT department at Time magazine, she discovered the myriad of services available to her at her public library and how they have saved her personally and professionally. She spoke the praises of librarians far and wide!

Afterwards, the dinner, drinks and discussion at Geordies 454 Bistro was well attended by MN Chapter members and St. Kate’s students and faculty. And, the best surprise of all, Marilyn Johnson joined us for dinner! For the first Salon hosting by the student group, it was great to see so many of you at the lecture and enjoy your conversation over a nice meal. Thank you so much to all who attended!

Then on October 18, the student group and the MN Chapter hosted a fascinating tour of the Plymouth Library. Jonathan Strand, the building’s architect, explained the technical green design details of the building and the many design considerations for meeting the needs of the Plymouth librarians and the Plymouth community. After the tour, several students and MN chapter members stayed for an experiment in speed networking. It was fun getting to know new people 4-5 minutes at a time!

The Student Group thanks the MN chapter for joining the St. Catherine University MLIS students for these events.

Plymouth Library Architectural Tour + Speed Networking

Tour the new Plymouth Library with architect Jonathan Strand of Bentz/Thompson/Rietow and one of the Plymouth librarians.

The Plymouth Library opened this past spring in the city of Plymouth. It is one of the latest public libraries to open in the Twin Cities area and it exemplifies some of the most cutting-edge ideas about what a contemporary library should be. A feasibility study that evaluated options for remodeling the existing facility and constructing an all-new building resulted in the decision to design a new building to overcome the constraints of the existing facility. This resolution opened the door for rethinking the library from the ground up. It also coincided with Hennepin County’s making a new commitment to sustainability, particularly to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. With these decisions in place the stage was set and it was clear that this would not be library as usual.

Early on many far-reaching ideas surfaced regarding what a library could be in terms of programming and experience for patrons, and operational efficiency for staff. In addition, designing for sustainability heavily influenced the outcome. The design team and owner/user teams evaluated many sustainability strategies to find the best value for energy-efficiency and enrichment of the library users’ experience. All of these ideas, themes, and strategies fueled innovation and resulted in a modern and flexible facility that transcends any one agenda.

The 2010 Grieg Aspnes Scholarship Winner

The Minnesota SLA chapter announced the 2010 winner of their annual Grieg Aspnes Scholarship. Congratulations go to Carol Lynn O'Gara - our own student group Co-Leader! Here is the announcement made today from the Minnesota chapter:

Congratulations to Carol Lynn O'Gara, the winner of the 2010 Grieg Aspnes scholarship!

Carol is planning on graduating in May of 2011 from the St. Kate’s MLIS program. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the College of St. Thomas and her law degree from the University of Minnesota.

Carol Lynn has served as one of the SLA Student Group co-presidents and will continue that role in the upcoming year. She has especially enjoyed her management and technology classes at St. Kate’s, and while her interests cover many areas of special librarianship, her newest interest is law libraries.

She just accepted a job at Crane Engineering as a librarian/research assistant. Carol Lynn also continues to volunteer at the Minnesota State Service for the Blind.

The Grieg Aspnes Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 award for a St. Catherine University MLIS student interested in special librarianship. It was created in honor of Grieg Aspnes, a past president of the Minnesota Chapter and of the Special Libraries Association and an active leader in the SLA Information Technology and Advertising Divisions and Education Committee. Grieg was also an advocate of the information profession and was a guest lecturer at the St. Catherine University and the University of Minnesota. The scholarship requirements are an interest in special librarianship (as shown by course selection or work experience), leadership ability (demonstrated in either academic or extracurricular activities), and overall high academic achievement. This scholarship is funded by the Minnesota Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, Grieg Aspnes memorial funds, and through a generous annual donation from Cargill. A special thank you goes to Cargill for their involvement in creating an ongoing award in memory of their first Cargill Information Center Manager and a long-time employee, Grieg Aspnes.

This new look for our blog is a preview of the new look for the Student Group Web site. The Web site redesign is in testing and will be launched before the start of the new school year. The blog has been redesigned to match more closely with the new Web site design and create a cohesive online presence for the Student Group.

SLA in New Orleans: What a Great Time!

Polly Perkins was our 2010 SLA National Conference Scholarship Winner and she was off to New Orleans in June. Polly wrote of her experience at her first SLA National Conference for the MN SLA Chapter's Spring 2010 Bulletin. Her reflections are reprinted here:

SLA in New Orleans: What a Great Time!

I was so excited to be awarded with the St. Kate's SLA Student Group Conference Scholarship. I was thrilled to be able to experience a truly professional networking and learning opportunity in a city I had not seen for over twenty years. When I arrived, I gathered my maps and headed out for a stroll around the French Quarter. I had no concept of the true definition of hot until I stepped outside my hotel and was steam broiled in about two seconds. As I walked and sweated, I was amazed at how lovingly the history had been preserved by the current residents and their refusal to give in to the devastation caused by Katrina. There is a unique flavor to New Orleans, some sort of amazing combination of gracious welcome along with an unabashed delight in the finer things in life; namely food and good times.

The SLA First-Timers and Fellows Connect event was a wonderful way to meet new people and run into several Minnesota friends. As I planned my attack on the sessions, I remembered their advice to leave open time to absorb all the input!

The keynote address by long time New Orleans residents Mary Matalin and James Carville was a fine start to the proceedings. The awards presentation had a special zip for the Minnesota contingent with Jim Tchobanoff being recognized for his years of contributions to SLA. As I selected sessions to attend, my biggest challenge was that so many really interesting sessions were at the exact same time! The choices were very difficult. There seemed to be information for everyone, no matter your expertise. The Taxonomy Division really outdid themselves by offering several sessions every day.

The INFO-EXPO was very overwhelming. I enjoyed wandering the hall and talking to the vendors about the wide variety of products. I had no idea there were so many specialty products for the different libraries.

Finally, I really enjoyed the chance to get to know people better. I met many people from other states and countries and really enjoyed talking to others about their experiences in their libraries, where they are now, and what they see in the future for their libraries. I was fortunate to be able to hang out with some fun MN Chapter members too! Thanks to all who helped make my experience enjoyable and memorable!

Reverse Mentoring Panel at MN Chapter Event

Our new Associate Dean for the St. Kate's MLIS program, Dr. Deborah Grealy, was introduced to the MN SLA Chapter at their meeting on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Dr. Grealy spoke of her career in Special Librarianship and how she has always sought out the local SLA chapter. She also spoke of the accreditation process and her vision for St. Catherine University's MLIS program. She was warmly received by Minnesota's special librarians.

Following Dr. Grealy's talk, five St. Catherine MLIS graduates and current students sat on a Reverse Mentoring Panel. The purpose of the panel was to provide veteran librarians with some insight from new librarians. The panelists spoke of school and work experiences that have been most helpful to them, ways experienced librarians can help those of us new on the job, the importance of communication and business skills, and being a "pretend extrovert."

Many thanks go out to Liz Scheibel for planning and moderating the panel. Also, thank you to Caralyn Champa, Terri Horsmann, Erin Perry, and Christine Simon for speaking on the panel. Lastly, thank you to the Minnesota SLA Chapter for inviting St. Kate MLIS students and graduates for the opportunity to share their experiences.

Spring Event - The SLA Alignment Project

Before we begin the new school year, it is time to look back at some of the events we had last spring. On Monday, March 15 the student group joined with the SCU MLIS department and shared a Monday Night Event. The student group's portion of the evening was a presentation on the SLA Alignment Project. The following recap, from Polly Perkins, was published in the MN SLA Chapter's Spring 2010 Bulletin:

"Caralyn Champa, MLIS Alum 2009, and SLA Alignment Ambassador, presented at the March 1st Monday night event at St Kates on the Alignment Project, an intensive two-year research effort recently undertaken by the Special Libraries Association. The Alignment Project was aimed at understanding the value of the information and knowledge professional in today's marketplace and how to communicate that value. Caralyn's report covered the Projects results, information of interest to everyone concerned with the changing information landscape and SLA. Caralyn's PowerPoint presentation is available at: http://www.stkate.edu/~mlisweb/change/eventsarchive.php."

Grieg Aspnes Memorial Award

Apply now for the Grieg Aspnes Memorial Award, a scholarship awarded to a St. Catherine University MLIS student who is interested in Special Librarianship. The scholarship is awarded by the Minnesota SLA Chapter.

The Grieg Aspnes Memorial Award

$2,000 Award for a SCU Student Interested in Special Librarianship

Library and Information Science students, either full-time or part-time, are invited to apply for an award of up to $2,000.00 and complimentary membership in the Special Libraries Association and the Minnesota Chapter of SLA. Only one such award will be granted annually and is limited to students who will graduate in December 2010 or later. The criteria are:

Interest in special librarianship, as shown by course selection or past experience;
Leadership abilities, demonstrated in either academic or extracurricular activities;
Overall academic achievements.

Students who are interested in applying should submit a letter addressing the criteria listed above, a resume, and a copy of their transcript of courses in library and information science to:

A Look in to Art Librarianship

On April 1, two groups of about five St. Kate's MLIS students traded an hour of beautiful spring weather for a tour of the library at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the trade was well worth it!

Head Librarian Janice Lurie gave us an introduction to the library/archives and the purpose it serves for the museum as a whole. She gave us all very good advice on the need to stay proactive and to work collaboratively with institutional colleagues, while keeping the organization's overall vision and mission in mind.

We heard about the wide variety of patrons at the library from Assistant Librarian Jessica McIntyre. She wowed everyone with her ability to answer obscure questions from the public, from students, and from museum curators.

NHPRC (National Historical Publications and Records Commission) Project Archivist Stephanie Kays told us about the projects that she works on as part of a three year grant. She is working with museum staff on document management issues, and also has the daunting yet enjoyable task of bringing organization to the Institute's archival records (dating from 1883). These archives document the history of how art museums developed in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

All of the librarians pointed out interesting and beautiful items in the library and it seemed to me that attendees were all thinking, "You have really cool jobs!" We saw signature books (yes, books of signatures) in the reference collection, auction catalogs, and old letters that tell the story of the museum's beginnings.

Janice invited all of us to return to the library with questions about their work, or with regular reference questions. She also mentioned that the library will soon have its own affinity group within museum supporters (as the various art departments already do) - email the library for more information about this opportunity to support the library and the museum.

Many thanks to Janice and her staff for having us! They clearly have a wonderful time working at the MIA, and the Minnesota arts community is fortunate to have these librarians!

The SLA Alignment Project

Caralyn Champa, MLIS Alum 2009, and SLA Alignment Ambassador, presented on the Alignment Project, an intensive two-year research effort undertaken recently by the Special Libraries Association at the March 1st Monday night event at St Kates. SLA 2010 Conference Scholarship Awarded

We're pleased to announce that the winner of this year's conference scholarship is Polly Perkins. The scholarship, up to $2000 in reimbursements, will send Polly to the SLA 2010 Annual Conference in New Orleans this June.

Polly Perkins has been a member of both the SLA Minnesota Chapter and the St Kate's Student SLA Group for two years. She has been part of the leadership team for the Student Group this academic year and plans to graduate in May of 2011. Last year, she parlayed a student library internship at Enclos Corp, a design/build specialty construction firm in Eagan, into a full-time position as their solo librarian. She is in the middle of rolling out an online knowledge center at Enclos and is very excited to attend her first SLA conference. Librarianship is Polly's third career;previously, she was a hospital administrator specializing in EPA/OSHA regulations and adult education, and later, she was a landscape designer for a local nursery. She is grateful for the opportunity to learn from the forward thinkers at the SLA conference and is looking forward to bringing back all her new-found knowledge to share.

Long overdue tour recap!

Apologies for the late tour recap - especially since it was a wonderful evening!

On October 15, after several of us shared a happy hour snack downtown, about 15 librarians and library students gathered at Hennepin County Library's Central Library in Minneapolis for a tour of the special collections there.

We started with Marcelyn Sletten in the Milestones Collection, part of the childrens' library. The collection includes award winners, local authors, and other noteworthy books and related objects. Marcelyn described her experiences with children in this room, including several funny and touching stories about children who responded to the items in the room (such as an international collection of Cinderella stories). After Marcelyn talked, we took some time to explore the collection ourselves. Everyone spotted something that provoked a memory of his or her own childhood, or of time spent with children, and the room was filled with excited exclamations.

Once we were able to tear ourselves away from the fun in the Milestones collection, we went upstairs with Special Collections librarian Heather Lawton to see the rest of the special collections. Many attendees were especially impressed by seeing the vault (and the security on it), where especially valuable or fragile items are stored, including a huge Audobon book. That book was one of many we saw with incredibly impressive illustrations. In the Athenaeum room, we also saw old Minneapolis high school yearbooks (including those of local celebrities Prince and Josh Hartnett - frequently requested by library visitors!).

It was a wonderful tour, and the librarians were extremely generous with sharing stories and information about the collections. Call one up if you want to see these fun and unusual items!

Join the St. Catherine University SLA Student Group for a tour of special collections at the Hennepin County Central Library in downtown Minneapolis. Librarian Marcelyn Sletten will take us through the Milestones Collection in the Children's Library, and then librarian Heather Lawton will show us the collections in the Athenaeum. These unique collections are carefully preserved by the public library for research purposes. Both of these areas are closed to the public, so don't miss this opportunity!

Quatrefoil Library Tour

Grieg was also a strong advocate of the information profession and was a guest lecturer in the library schools at St. Catherine’s and the University of Minnesota. This award, made only to the College of St. Catherine, is funded by the Minnesota Chapter of the Special Libraries Association and the Cargill Information Center for the purpose of encouraging the recipient to pursue a career in special librarianship. The College of St. Catherine expresses its appreciation to the Aspnes family, the Minnesota Chapter of SLA and Cargill for providing this grant award.

MN SLA Salon Series

The St. Kate's SLA Student Group is pleased to announce that Erin Perry is the winner of this year's Student SLA Conference Scholarship!

Erin will be graduating this May from the Dominican University/St. Kate's MLIS program. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the Central College in Pella, Iowa.

She is currently employed at Target Corporation where she is Supervisor of Vendor Supply Chain Technology in Vendor Operations. Her team is responsible for troubleshooting, analysis and assisting vendors with supply chain processes.

Erin has served since Fall 2007 as one of the SLA Student Group co-presidents. As a member of the leadership board, she has been part of the group's direction and a 2007-2008 campaign to expand membership. She assisted with development and execution of new ideas for fundraising in support of the annual conference scholarship. In addition, she partnered to plan multiple social events and several library tours sponsored by the group.

With this as a background, you can see why Erin was chosen as the winner! After the conference, we will hear about her experience in the Minnesota SLA Chapter Bulletin.

This year we are able to offer a $1,500 scholarship to a St. Kate's MLIS student to attend SLA's 2009 conference in Washington, D.C., June 14-17.

The application process is quite easy: you must submit an essay of 1,500 words, be attending the conference for the first time, be in the MLIS program at St. Kate's, and be an SLA member (the membership fee is $35, and it's quite possible a member of the Minnesota SLA chapter would sponsor you).

The Resume Event co-sponsored by our group and the MLIS department was a success! 27 people attended and heard Judy Galt of Galt Information Services, LLC give an overview of resumes. Attendees then were able to review their own resume with Renee Weddle, Librarian at Cargill; Jane Ann Nelson, Library Director at Augsburg or Marilyn Cathcart, MLIS Assistant Professor and former Director of the Legislative Library.

Recap: Tour of the MHS Library

Last night the St. Kate's SLA Student Group, in partnership with CALCO, hosted a tour of the library at the Minnesota History Center.

Librarian Brigid Shields took us on a whirlwind tour of the library, showing us the books, inventories and microfilms in the library's reading rooms, and also the underground storage areas. Tour attendees were astounded by the sheer volume in these dim, climate controlled rooms: room underneath room of stacks, and football field sized areas of shelves - and yet, like many libraries, space is running out to house the collections.

We got the basics on the most popular reasons people use the library's resources: you can do research on your family (including birth, death, and immigration records), house history (try searching: college st catherine - no CdC in the 1920's!), and various topics in Minnesota history.

Tour attendees included 12 MLIS students, 2 alumnae, 12 librarians (including representatives from 4 CALCO libraries), and even 2 prospective MLIS students. It seems likely that many of us will be back - seeing all the library has to offer was an inspiration to learn more about our families and our state!

Historical Society Library Tour - New Date!

Minnesota Historical Society Library Tour

Join the St. Kate's SLA student group for a unique tour of the Minnesota Historical Society Library. Librarian Brigid Shields will introduce us to the library's collections, including behind-the-scenes areas not open to the public. In preparation for the 2008 elections, we'll hear about what the library holds on well-known Minnesota political personalities. Attendees will have the opportunity to see museum exhibits after the tour.

What: Tour of the Minnesota Historical Society Library.
Where: Minnesota History Center, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102-1906
When: Tuesday, October 28, 2008. Tour 6:00pm-7:15pm, time to visit museum exhibits until 8:00pm.
Cost: No cost to attend; the History Center's parking lot is a pay lot.

End of the Year Happy Hour and Elections

Are you interested in a simple, fun way to build your resume and network among library professionals in MN?

If so, you should consider becoming a St. Kate's SLA officer.

On Thursday, May 8 at 6 p.m. we will meet at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul to elect officers for next year and plan for the group's future.

Being an officer is a rewarding experience. You have the opportunity to raise money for scholarships. You can set up library tours. You get to participate in the MN SLA's board meetings and work closely with other members on the state level. The experience and contacts you'll make will be invaluable and it's not overly time consuming despite your biggest fears. With about a meeting a month, we were able to set up a library tour each semester, a few happy hours during each semester and plan our fundraising activities.

Even if you haven't been able to attend any of the meetings so far or can't make Thursday's Happy Hour, you are still eligible to become an officer.

If you are interested, please send your name, contact information and a brief explanation of what you would like to accomplish and what position you'd like to fill to krista_angers@comcast.net even if you can't be there on May 8. We can still find a place for you.

The Grieg Aspnes Memorial Award
$2,000 Award for a CSC Student Interested in Special Librarianship

The deadline for application is May 19th, 2008

Library and Information Science students, either full-time or part-time, are invited to apply for an award of up to $2,000.00 and complimentary membership in the Special Libraries Association and the Minnesota Chapter of SLA. Only one such award will be granted annually and is limited to students who will graduate in December 2008 or later.

The criteria are:
1. Interest in special librarianship, as shown by course selection or past experience;
2. Leadership abilities, demonstrated in either academic or extracurricular activities;
3. Overall academic achievements.

Students who are interested in applying should submit a letter addressing the criteria listed above, a resume, and a copy of their transcript of courses in library and information science to:

The Grieg Aspnes Memorial Award is in honor of Grieg Aspnes, a talented librarian at Cargill, a past president of the Special Libraries Association, and an active leader in its Minnesota Chapter, Information Technology and Advertising Divisions, and Education Committee. Grieg was also a strong advocate of the information profession and was a guest lecturer in the library schools at St. Catherine’s and the University of Minnesota. This award, made only to the College of St. Catherine, is funded by the Minnesota Chapter of the Special Libraries Association and the Cargill Information Center for the purpose of encouraging the recipient to pursue a career in special librarianship. The College of St. Catherine expresses its appreciation to the Aspnes family, the Minnesota Chapter of SLA and Cargill for providing this grant award.

Lacey is the winner of this year's CSC SLA Student Group Conference Scholarship. The scholarship will send Lacey to the SLA 2008 Annual Conference in Seattle , WA this June.

Lacey Mamak is a member of both the SLA Minnesota chapter and the St. Kate's SLA student group. She currently works at the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library as the senior library assistant. Prior to her work at the Legislative Library, she worked at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville , Virginia , and the Mills College Library in Oakland, California . She received her B.A. in psychology from Mills College and is excited to graduate with her M.L.I.S. from St. Kate's. Lacey would like to thank the student group and Minnesota chapter for this amazing opportunity.

St. Kate's SLA Tour Draws Crowd

Over 30 library students and librarians from across the Twin Cities gathered at the Walker Art Center library on Thursday March 6th for a tour of this very special library.

Rosemary Furtak, Walker Librarian, led the group through an amazing collection focused on modern art. The library even keeps verticle clipping files brimming with information about well-known to emerging artists, including obscure ephemera not readily found elsewhere. The group got to experience the Walker archives and hear about the wide range of images that are kept to document that museum's happenings -- including photos of every exhibit that the Walker has ever produced. The tour concluded with the chance to look at - and in some cases, play with - an array of art books that Rosemary had assembled for the tour. These unique artist-created works were a joy to see and touch (after donning appropriate archives gloves, of course!).

Ever wondered what an art or museum library is like? Come see the Walker Art Center's library and how this special library supports the exciting work of one of Minnesota's premier cultural institutions. Rosemary Furtak, Walker Art Center librarian, will lead a 45-minute tour with 15 minutes for questions and discussion.

Plus, you can choose to visit the Walker for free the rest of the evening.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

There is a global conversation going on right now about the next generation of the web and the next generation of users. It’s happening under the name of Web 2.0. It’s the new hot web where true human interaction takes precedence over merely ‘cool’ information delivery and e-mail. It’s about putting information into the real context of our users’ lives, work and play. Concurrently, there's another big conversation about the vision for what Library 2.0 might look like in this Web 2.0 ecosystem. The social web is coming fast and it’s BIG! What are the skills and competencies that Library 2.0 will need? Come and hear what Web 2.0 is and the adaptations we’ll need to make to thrive in the future. Special Libraries are not immune to these shifts - are we focusing on the real end user's needs? What can we do to prepare our users and learners for this new world? Stephen Abram will run us though the changes that are being wrought by Google, the Millennials and 2.0. It’ll be a roller-coaster!

BIOGRAPHY OF STEPHEN ABRAM

Stephen Abram, MLS, is the 2008 President of SLA, the Past-President of the Canadian Library Association, Vice President Innovation for SirsiDynix and Chief Strategist for the SirsiDynix Institute. He was VP of Corporate Development for Micromedia ProQuest and Publisher, Electronic Information for Thomson. He has also run libraries for Suncor, Coopers & Lybrand, Smith Lyons Torrance Stevenson and Mayer & Hay Group.

Stephen has been listed by Library Journal as one of their first "Mover and Shakers", ’key’ people influencing the future of libraries and librarianship. He has been awarded SLA's John Cotton Dana Award as well as being a Fellow of the SLA. He was Canadian Special Librarian of the Year and Alumni of the Year for the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Information Studies. He was President of the Ontario Library Association in 2002 as well as sitting on the SLA Board of Directors as Director and Secretary. He gives over 90 international keynote talks annually to library and information industry conferences and writes articles and columns for Information Outlook, Feliciter, Access, Multimedia & Internet @ Schools, and Library Journal. His book, Out Front with Stephen Abram compiled by Judith Siess and Jonathan Lorig was published by ALA editions in 2007.

Twelve students and librarians toured Thomson's corporate library, law library and book manufacturing plant.

"To see how a book was made, to look at the presses in motion -- it was amazing!" said one attendee. Afterwards, a number of people gathered to celebrate and network at a nearby hot spot. Yummy appetizers were enjoyed by all, compliments of the SLA group.

Thomson Tour and Happy Hour

Join the St. Kate's SLA student group for a tour of Thomson libraries in Eagan. St. Kate's MLIS students are invited to tour the corporate library, the law library and the book manufacturing plant. It's not often that you get a chance to see inside a corporate library, but the Thomson librarians were kind enough to agree to stay late and keep the libraries open for us. They'll give us a tour and answer questions.

After the tour, we'll all meet over at Jake's City Grille for happy hour and some casual networking. If you can't make it to the tour, feel free to meet us at Jake's.

Someone will be there to escort you up to the library. Please arrive promptly by 5:45 pm to be ready for the 6:00 tour.

Introducing your 2007-2008 Student Leaders

Here are the official bios of the student leaders for 2007-2008. You may have already met one or more of us when we introduced the SLA in a few selected courses.

Amy Gustafson Co-President (Fundraising & Marketing Coordinator)

Amy is planning to graduate in May 2008 from the Dominican University/St. Kate’s MLIS program. Her studies have focused on special libraries, online database research and web design. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Amy will be responsible for the marketing of the group and organizing the fundraiser event. She will also support her fellow co-presidents with delegated assignments such as writing articles for the SLA MN Chapter newsletter and website projects. Amy currently works as a writer in corporate marketing and communications for Regis Corporation in Minneapolis, MN. Her goal is to work in an environment where she can combine her experience in marketing and writing with the knowledge she’s obtained in the MLIS program and her love of research.

Krista Jacobson, Co-President (Website & Listserv Manager)

Krista Jacobson is a 2nd year student at CSC. She is a former foreign language teacher who currently works as an Administrative Assistant for a small manufacturing company. She has traveled extensively and has lived in both Spain and France. She currently lives in downtown St. Paul and enjoys swimming and trying new recipes which she never consumes. She is interested in the educational aspects of special libraries and international librarianship. She hopes to improve student access to information regarding SLA's student group via the website as well as support its members in any way she can.

Amy Larson, Co-President (Events Coordinator)

Amy is a graduate of Carleton College and 2nd year student at the College of St. Catherine. She works at JAMF Software in Minneapolis, doing operations and educational sales in a start-up environment. Amy is interested in becoming an information scientist with a focus on technology, research, and competitive intelligence. She lives in St. Paul where she gardens, reads science fiction, works on an old house, and takes care of a husband, dog and cat. Amy looks forward to connecting with special librarians and helping the student SLA group plan events in the upcoming year.

Margaret Ostrander, Treasurer (Finances & Reporting)

Margaret is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at the College of St. Catherine/Dominican University. She is employed at Thomson Corporation in the learning center and knowledge sharing group, where she facilitates access to a global collection of staff development resources and leads Web 2.0 initiatives. Margaret has interned at the Center for Transportation Studies where she first grew to love special libraries. She has also worked at Wilson Library at the University of Minnesota. In a previous life, Margaret spent time in the non-profit world as a grant writer, social service provider and community resource development coordinator. Volunteering at the Resource Center of the Americas library is what first inspired her to consider librarianship as a career. Margaret holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities in Women's Studies and Chicano Studies.

Erin Perry, Co-President (MN Chapter Liaison & Reporting)

Erin is a 2nd year student in the Dominican University Program at St. Kate’s and currently works at Target Corporation in the Vendor Operations area. She is interested in special libraries and helping people connect to and decipher information. Hopkins is the city she calls home now but was proudly born and raised in Iowa. (no jokes – she has heard them all. *smile*) If downtime exists, reading, traveling and escaping the bustle of the city are high on her priority list. Erin is a former marketing event planner and will be using her skills to help plan activities and coordinate administrative duties. She is also very excited to be involved in encouraging growth of the student group and the group’s connection to the Minnesota SLA chapter.

Monday, October 1, 2007 from 7-9 PM, the LIS Department and the College of St. Catherine Library are jointly sponsoring a showing of The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians through Film (Jeanne d'Arc Auditorium from 7-9 PM).

According to the website (http://www.hollywoodlibrarian.com/about.html ) there’s a “high-tech corporate librarian” in the film.

The MN Chapter will be providing popcorn and/or snacks.

Student SLA Member Awarded Grieg Aspnes Memorial Scholarship

Margaret Ostrander, current SLA student group Treasurer, was awarded the Grieg Aspnes Memorial Scholarship this year.

Margaret's interested in special libraries is linked to SLA, as she comments in her scholarship essay, "The Minnesota chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and its St. Kate’s student group counterpart have played a prominent role in my passion for special libraries. SLA events afford unique networking opportunities with both future and seasoned professionals, through which I decided SLA membership should be a key piece of my professional life."

This annual $2,000 scholarship is awarded to a to a College of St. Catherine MLIS student. The award is based on:

Interest in special librarianship
Leadership abilities
Overall academic achievement

This award honors Grieg Aspnes, a talented librarian at Cargill, a past president of the Special Libraries Association, and an active leader in its Minnesota Chapter and is funded by the Minnesota Chapter of SLA and the Cargill Information Center.
