Holiday Party and Semester Recap

Hello SLA-ers! Congratulations on finishing another semester! We have wrapped up everything for SLA until Spring semester, but we wanted to give you a quick recap before break. Here are the minutes from the last meeting of the semester. Below, you can see photos from the Silent Auction, where we raised $1,000 for a student to attend the SLA 2018 Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Watch this space for information about applying for the stipend starting in the spring. Bonus: Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, will be the keynote speaker! We hope you have a very relaxing holidays! Congratulations to everyone who is graduating, and for everyone else, see you in 2018!

Holiday Party Registration Now Open!

Registration for the SLA-MN Holiday Party is now open! This year's event will take place December 8, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:30 in the Friends Community Room at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2400 3rd Avenue South, Minneapolis . The event will include hors d'oeuvres, dessert, and a cash bar, as well as the opportunity to view the galleries at MIA and tour the MIA Art Research and Reference Library. The event also features our Silent Auction to raise money to send one student to the SLA Conference in Baltimore next summer. (Check here for more details on how to donate .) Registration is $20 for students. Note that you can request a professional sponsor your attendance if you would like. Visit the  registration page  for more details and to sign up!  The Holiday Party is a wonderful chance to network with professionals and have some fun before the end of the semester. We hope you will all join us!

Our most recent Information Professionals Panel took place on October 30. We had an excellent group of panelists who braved the bad weather and shared some great insights with us!  We recorded the panel, and we'll add a link to that recording as soon as we can. SLA Holiday Party and Silent Auction

It's hard to believe it, but it's almost time for the SLA-MN Holiday Party and the SLA Student Group Silent Auction! This year's holiday party will be Friday, December 8 at the Minneapolis Institute of Art . We'll share more details soon, but save the date for a wonderful evening of food, drinks, networking, and of course the silent auction. For now, we are looking for donations for the Silent Auction. We use the proceeds from the Silent Auction to help send one student to the SLA Annual Conference, which will be in Baltimore next summer. But we can't do it without you! We need your help with donations! Information Professionals Panel

Our Fall 2017 Information Professionals Panel is fast approaching! We will hear from an incredible variety of professionals who work in special libraries or non-traditional information roles. Quatrefoil Library Tour

St. Kate's SLA students were treated to a great tour at the Quatrefoil Library in Minneapolis this past Monday! St. Kate's MLIS alum Karen Hogan guided the tour, which included a look inside the library and learning about the collection's creators, David Irwin and Dick Hewetson. Quatrefoil Library Tour

Hello SLA! A tour of  The Quatrefoil Library   will begin at  6:00 p.m.  on  Monday, September 25 . Please RSVP through the following  invitation   by  Friday, September 22 . If you plan to attend, enter the library through the back door (the front entrance will be locked until  7 p.m. ). First Meeting of the Semester

Welcome back, SLA! We hope you had an enjoyable summer! Our first meeting of the semester will be this Thursday, September 14, from 5:15 - 5:45 in CdC 20 . We will be discussing SLA-MN's upcoming Tips From the Hiring Manager Panel and planning the rest of the semester. As if all that weren't exciting enough, we'll have pizza too! SLA + SAA Summer Happy Hour

Hello SLA-ers! You are cordially invited to join us Monday July 10, 2017 from 5-7 p.m at Bonfire Wood Fire Cooking on Grand Avenue in St. Paul for the SLA + SAA Summer Happy Hour! SLA and SAA are joining forces for an informal social hour over the summer - stop by to share some appetizers, get to know your fellow students, and learn more about what SLA and SAA are up to for the 2017-2017 school year. Everyone is welcome, so don't worry if you're not an official member of either group. Directions are available at the link above. You can find parking along Grand Avenue or Summit Avenue or in the Victoria Crossing parking lot off of Victoria and Grand. You can also take the 63 Bus route. We hope to see you all there! We had an excellent panel for our Spring 2017 Information Professionals Panel. Our panelists offered great insights and advice to St. Kate's students. The SLA Student Group is hosting the Spring 2017 Information Professionals Panel on  Monday April 10 at 6:00 p.m.  in CdC 19 . We have a really great group of panelists lined up for you, including:  Jessica Huffman, Research Associate at the American Transportation Research Institute Lindsey Kobow, Taxonomic Analyst Janice Alda Lurie, Head Librarian, Minneapolis Institute of Art Janelle Beitz, Law Librarian, Frederickson & Bryon Marilee Tuite, Librarian, Minnesota Department of Transportation and University of Minnesota The panelists will talk about their job experience and share advice and insights with students. Spring Announcements

Thanks to everyone who came to our rescheduled meeting today! We have a couple of action items to think about in the next few weeks:  Information Professionals Panel -  April 10, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.  in CdC 19 ! Our panelists are confirmed and we've got a great lineup. Come hear about a variety of MLIS careers you might not have thought about before! Elections : The SLA Student Group is now accepting nominations for next year's leadership positions. If you are interested in participating in the Student Group leadership next year, please email  stkatesla@gmail.com  by  April 17 . We'll hear from the nominees at the next meeting and hold elections after that.  MLIS Summit Student Fair:  The SLA Student Group will have a poster at the MLIS Summit on  April 24 . Event: MIA Edible Book Festival

The Minneapolis Institute of Art has announced a great book-themed event:  Edible Book Festival 2017    Sunday, April 2, 2017 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm Location: Minneapolis Institute of Art, Target Wing 1 st   floor, Friends Community Room. If you have a taste for books, join us at the Minneapolis Institute of Art for a free family-friendly event hosted by Mia’s Library Affinity Group. Submit your own entry to be judged, or just stop by, enjoy refreshments, and cast your ballot for the winner in the People’s Choice category. March Meeting Date Change

Due to some scheduling conflicts, we need to reschedule the March 16 SLA Student Group meeting. The March SLA Student Group meeting will be on  Wednesday March 15 at 5:15 p.m. in CdC 20  (please note the room change) .  Sorry for the inconvenience and see you all on March 15! 

2017 SLA Conference Travel Stipend

We are pleased to be able to offer a travel stipend to the 2017 SLA Conference taking place June 16 to 20, 2017  in Phoenix, Arizona. Applications for the travel stipend are now being accepted until April 7, 2017. The stipend is open to all St. Kate's MLIS students.  To apply, submit a 1,500 word essay to Konhe Yoon (kyoon@stkate.edu) covering:  Your involvement with SLA and/or commitment to the field of Special Librarianship;  How attending the 2017 SLA Conference will further your career and/or education; and  How your attendance can benefit the St. Kate's MLIS program.  If you have any questions, contact stkatesla@gmail.com.  We hope you'll take advantage of this great opportunity to attend the SLA Conference!
