Requirements:
- Applicant must be a student in good standing at a graduate library or information science program.
- Ability to work ~10 hours per week at the Minnesota State Law Library during regular business hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (excluding holidays).
- Excellent organization and time-management skills.
- Preference may be given to applicants with a legal background or those who express interest in law librarianship.
- Successful completion of a background check.
Description: The Minnesota State Law Library Internship provides supervised experience in three key areas of law library operations.
- Technical services:
- Update electronic index of legal periodicals
- Shift collections
- Convert microform documents to digital format
- Electronic Services:
- Create original content and update current content in LibGuides
- Assist with additional website updating
- Public Services:
- Provide supervised assistance to patrons at the reference desk and during scheduled legal clinics
- Perform basic legal research to assist library patrons and staff, including the Law Library Services to Prisoners program.

ARL/SAA Mosaic Program Fellow
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL)/Society of American Archivists (SAA) Mosaic Program II
is now accepting applications for the 2019–2021 cohort. The program
promotes diversification of the archives and special collections
professional workforce by supporting master of library and information
science (MLIS) students from traditionally underrepresented racial and
ethnic groups who are concentrating on archives or special collections
librarianship.
Program Benefits:
The ARL/SAA Mosaic Program II offers a generous compensation package for each program participant consisting of: - Tuition stipend of up to $10,000 distributed in four equal installments of $2,500 per semester or quarter
- Paid yearlong internship in a partner archives or library organization beginning in fall 2019
- Participation in select Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) trainings
- Mentoring from an archives professional or special collections librarian
- Financial assistance of up to $1,000 for relocation to the area of the MLIS program that the participant will attend
- Student membership in SAA for two years
- Support for travel to and participation in the ARL Annual Leadership Symposium, held during the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in January 2020
- Support for travel to and participation in the annual ARL/SAA Mosaic Leadership Forum and SAA Annual Meeting in summer 2020
To be eligible for the ARL/SAA Mosaic Program II, you must:
- Identify as being from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, based on the categories outlined by the US Census Bureau or Statistics Canada or Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) people classifications
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada
- Be accepted into a master’s program in archival science, archival management, digital archives, special collections, or a related program
- Remain enrolled in at least six graduate credit hours per term through completion of the designated graduate program(s) and have at least one full academic year remaining in studies
- Maintain a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4-point scale) each term and submit transcripts as evidence of progression towards completion of graduate studies in the targeted areas

National Transportation Library (NTL) Collection Analysis and Digital Preservation Fellow
Join
the National Transportation Library (NTL) and be offered an opportunity
to gain hands-on learning and skills in collection
analysis and digital preservation, relating to transportation. The
Fellow will learn to use Tableau to create and analyze NTL Collections
and create bibliometric dashboards. The Fellow will learn how to
identify, evaluate, and process legacy content of historical
significance for long term digital preservation. Content may include
audio files, research datasets, reports, still images, and memos. The
Fellow will learn to migrate formats as needed to preserve usefulness,
apply metadata, and add to transportation collections
in NTL’s digital repository.
The Fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with NTL staff on new projects and initiatives as they arise.
Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities to gain skills and experience may include:
- Operating a digital repository;
- Assessing records for duplication, metadata quality and adherence to NTL metadata policy;
- Creating finding aids;
- Collaborating with NTL Metadata Librarians on authority control projects, such as improving the integration of digital object identifiers into NTL systems;
- Participating in workflow assessment for web-archiving;
- Collaborating with NTL Digital Librarian and NTL Data Curator to develop a policy for transportation web content and identify best practices using Internet Archive’s Archive-IT service;
- Assisting in furthering NTL’s social media efforts to promote library resources and services;
- Cloud computing;
- Data dictionary and mediated submission application development.
The
selected candidate will receive a stipend as support for living and
other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates
are determined by DOT officials and are based on the candidate’s
academic and professional background. The candidate may also be eligible
to receive a health insurance allowance and reimbursement for travel
expenses. This appointment is full-time (40 hours
per week) for one year and may be extended in increments of one year,
up to three years total, contingent upon project needs and funding
availability.
This
program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute
for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an
interagency agreement between DOE and DOT. The initial appointment is
for 12 months but may be renewed upon recommendation of DOT and is
contingent on the availability of funds.
The participant will receive an annual stipend of approximately
$65,000 commensurate with educational level and experience, in
additional to a health insurance supplement of $4,800; professional
development allowance of $2,500, and a relocation allowance
of $2,000. Proof of health insurance is required for participation
in this program. The appointment is full-time in the Washington,
DC area. Participants do not become employees of DOT, DOE or the program
administrator, and there are no employment-related
benefits.
