Fall 2024 Semester in Review

Image
Hello everyone, It's been an eventful semester for us here at the SLA-SG in St. Kate's. Besides our monthly online meetings, we had two main events: the first was an outing to the Minnesota Department of Transportation Library in St. Paul, where we learned how the collection developed over the complex history of the department; we followed up with a visit to Minneapolis and the American Swedish Institute's Archives, which we did in partnership with St. Kate's Society of American Archivists student group.  Both were outstanding! If you missed the opportunity to join us for either trip earlier this semester, you can visit these institutions' sites to learn more about their opening hours and availability of tours. Andersen Horticultural Library - Pictures

Image
Hello everyone, Last month, SLA-SG paid a visit to the U of M's Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (or "the Arb") in Chaska, where we toured the special collections of the Andersen Horticultural Library. We'd been looking forward to this ever since Spring started, and we were so happy to have the weather cooperate for a sunny day out! Here are some pictures we took to commemorate the event:   The library is proudly furnished with original woodwork chairs and tables designed by George Nakashima. They make the space feel like a natural extension of the Arboretum, as much an art piece as a library. The public section of the library is a warm, cozy collection which invites you to browse its stacks for hours on end.    We were generously allowed to take pictures of some of the items exhibited for us in the climate-controlled special collection. The materials represent a wide range of subjects, from landscaping, to ornithology, and to botany, among many, many others. We'll ...

Gale Family Library - Pictures

Image
Hello all, Earlier this month, SLA-SG had the opportunity to visit the Gale Family Library and its unique collections. Thank you to everyone who joined us! Here are some pictures we took to commemorate our visit:          The extent of the archived collections needs to be seen to be believed.                                                                        An old state map welcomes visitors at the door.               It was a great privilege to see these rare items up close, and even handle some ourselves.            A dapper gentleman made sure we left the collection as tidied up as himself.    Fire insurance maps dating back through the last century.    ...
